Mitron -- India's rival to China's popular short video-sharing app TikTok is giving a stiff competition to the latter and has been downloaded over five million or 50 lakh times on the Google Play Store within a month of its release. This development comes at a time when TikTok is facing severe flak in the wake of several controversies.

According to media reports, the app’s name -- Mitron -- and its short-video sharing format is the key reason for its quick popularity. Notably, Mitron, which means friends in Hindi, is a term commonly used by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in several of his speeches.

Mitron video platform, also known as MitronTV app, had a 4.7 rating on the official Google Play Store at the time of writing this article. The app is reportedly released by an IIT Roorke student named Shivank Agarwal; the Mitron App essentially looks like a clone of TikTok and similar to the latter, lets users share short videos on the platform. In another feature similar to TikTok, users on the platform can swipe up and down to browse through various videos available on Mitron.

According to the creator of Mitron app, "the app is designed for people to showcase their innovative videos inline with its theme with light humour".  The app's description read: “Our mission at Mitron is to create a platform where people can come and entertain themselves with small videos posted by people across the globe and at the same time create a social incentive for people to share and create their own videos.

It is pertinent to note that ByteDance-owned TikTok's rating dropped drastically on the play store amid a growing clamour for banning the app after a spat between two content creators of YouTube and TikTok snowballed into a big controversy.

However, TikTok, taking note of the situation had said that keeping the platform safe was its priority. "Keeping people on TikTok safe is a top priority, and we make it clear in our 'Term of Service and Community Guidelines' that clearly outlines what is not acceptable on our platform. As per the policy, we do not allow content that risks the safety of others, promotes physical harm, or glorifies violence against women," a TikTok spokesperson had told Times Now in a statement.

Earlier in April, TikTok and its Chinese version -- Douyin, both owned by parent firm ByteDance, together amassed over 2 billion downloads globally on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store, as per a report by Sensor Tower Store Intelligence. According to Sensor Tower, India was a big driver of TikTok installs.

The mobile app market tracker said that TikTok generated 611 million lifetime downloads in India to date or 30.3 per cent of the total. After India, China was the second country with most downloads of Douyin, the TikTok alternative.
